Ed Colgate is Co-Founder of Tanvas, Inc., the surface haptic company making it possible to feel what you see on a touchscreen. He is also the Breed University Design Professor at Northwestern University where he has been a member of the faculty since 1988. As a leading figure in the field of haptics, which aims to create human-machine interfaces via the sense of touch, Ed started the first academic conference in the field (IEEE Haptics Symposium), served as founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Haptics, and most recently helped start the first industry-facing conference, Smart Haptics. Ed is a serial entrepreneur, having led two previous startups that were both acquired. He also served on the Board of Directors of Methode Electronics (NYSE: MEI), a global manufacturer of automotive and industrial components. Ed is a Fellow of the National Academy of Invention and received his bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees from MIT.
